What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
