The Hit Drama Announced for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
