Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Oil Deliveries to the Indian Nation in Defiance of Washington Pressure
In a unambiguous statement to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to guarantee “unbroken” deliveries of crude oil to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and affirmed their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”
A Statement For the United States
This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at Washington, which have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into scaling back its historical ties with Moscow. This comes comes after recent Washington's moves, notably the introduction of trade penalties against Indian goods due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.
“Our nation is a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and all needed for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the steady delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, while not mentioning oil directly, echoed the theme by saying that “energy security has been a key and crucial foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”
Challenging American Pressure
In the lead-up to the summit, via a television interview, Putin had criticized Washington's stance over India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India claim the identical right?”
This trip was his maiden journey to India following the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a clear show to demonstrate that the bond between the heads of state was undisturbed.
A Warm Greeting
In a rare gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace akin to close allies before enjoying a closed-door supper together.
The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “built on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”
Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
Friday's talks resulted in several important deals regarding defence and economic cooperation. One significant result was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which sets a goal to double mutual trade to $100bn annually by the end of the decade.
Additionally vowed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia continues to be India's largest source of defence equipment, this role has reduced over the past decade as India aims to broaden its sources.
Their communique stressed an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of advanced defence platforms, although explicit details of purchases such as the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.
Overall, Russia and India restated that in the “present intricate, strained, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties stay resilient to foreign influence.”
