Peak Pizza? Domino's Leader Departs After Shift Into Fried Chicken.

The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who suggested the UK might have hit peak pizza while expanding the company into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its directors.

Executive Transition

Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who was with Domino's for over 20 years, had sought to shift Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, remarking in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the quickest rising food category in the globe.

Board Friction

It is understood that there was disagreement between Rennie and the board over his focus and direction, although the company's release said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which Rennie described as a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and Northern Ireland.

While the business is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.

Leadership Comment

Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to drive further growth and value creation in our primary operations. We are concentrating on selecting the suitable leader to direct the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”

Industry Challenges

In the latest update, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said sales dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed reduced spending in the period before the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.

Competitors are also struggling. Pizza Hut revealed the closing of multiple locations a last month, after the company behind its British operations fell into administration.

Wellness Efforts

Adapting to customer preferences towards better nutrition, the company has introduced light options, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 calories as well as plant-based and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Leadership

Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to take on the chief executive role long-term.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a several current expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to implementing at a rapid rate.”

She added these involved ongoing development on the organization's supply chain and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also without a full-time finance director until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow acts as interim finance chief.
