Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. The secretary announced plans to cut federal funds from California and warned eliminating the authority to issue trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused fatalities and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier stated he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration responded in a last month's statement addressing Duffy's threats. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A recent survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor should run for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.
He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
