A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters went into the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location revealed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the access point and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
