Foolishness and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever snapped of a individual from the royal household.
Present was the Baron Killyleagh, with his arm around a female youth, while another individual smiled suggestively in the rear.
Absent that snapshot, captured at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the assertions of a adolescent who said she was transported across the ocean and compelled to have cursory relations with a member of the royal family?
A curious, revealing gesture by someone who had overtly stated to have no heard of her, said he could not have had sex with her, and yet provided millions of family money to avert a protracted legal case.
Over a Decade of Disgrace
In this context, conversations of the royals acting swiftly to cut Andrew off are inaccurate. This affair has endured for the better part of 15 years since that image, and an additional snapshot of Andrew walking congenially with a convicted sex offender surfaced.
- Arrogance: For what duration did his family members, possibly even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so arrogant?
- Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his aides and the police were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable friends given he openly welcomed them to palaces.
- Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.
Travel were documented in public records: helicopter travel from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of commercial flights, all for the convenience of "the travel enthusiast".
A Life of Privilege
Then there was the arrogance which expected deference when he walked into a space or the profound consciousness about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his associates.
He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who strangely indulged him, was still alive. The sovereign did at least revoke him of public duties and military positions in the aftermath of his disastrous and, it is now clear, untruthful public statement six years ago.
Recent Developments
Merely in the last two weeks that events sped up, following the issuance of accounts giving more grim information of his conduct and that of his associates.
More information have again exposed Andrew's assumption that he could get away with deceiving about his interaction with a notorious figure.
The public (and the journalists) were far ahead of the royals. There was not a single person of any consequence to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.
Monarchical Concerns
The more astute monarchical figures realized that. The key objective is to pass on the monarchy, if not as previously at least whole and unblemished.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of earlier rulers, proving they are useful, dutiful and reactive to their people.
Andrew was putting all that in danger in an era when deference and discretion is no longer enough.
Consequences
Finally, the famously indecisive king was pressured more. There was little choice. The institution had relinquished authority of the story.
Now it is the stripping of honorifics and the continued and life-long public humiliation that will afflict Andrew most deeply.
- Demotion: Lowered to just a private citizen
- Past Example: The initial monarch to forfeit his titles in contemporary era
- Naval Career: Particularly hurtful given his role in the Falklands war
He is still a counsellor of state, on paper able to substitute for the king, and he is still in the succession to the monarchy, but none of these will truly come to pass.
What Lies Ahead
Do individuals he comes across still defer to him? Will they still slip up and call him Sir? Would they say Sir,
Naturally, he is not retiring to an ordinary town, but to the sovereign's large grounds at a royal residence.
At that location, he will be furnished by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some sort of personal stipend.
It is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a minimal rent for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.
Pending Matters
Matters remain unresolved. There are still documents in the possession of overseas authorities to be made public.
- Governmental Scrutiny: Will legislators seek further action
- Fiscal Review: Or scrutinize the misuse of state resources
- Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his actions
Maybe for the time being the institutional damage to the monarchy is restricted. The statement from the institution was evidently that the stripping of titles was what the king, and particularly other senior royals, desired.
A Shift in Position
No more deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, significantly, the short communication showed clearly that the institution were aligning with the complainant's narrative of occurrences.
Furthermore, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed consideration for the survivors: "These actions are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the accusations against him."
Finally it is presumption, self-seeking and indolence that will destroy the crown. In his folly, self-indulgence and corruption, Andrew seems never to have grasped that reality.
