Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A recent acronym came to light a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government rejects these accusations, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. A competition that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
