Chicago's MLB Team Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Agreement.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his permission and grants him a free agent at the termination of the deal. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a game-tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual championship win.

The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
