A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.

The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages locations domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna heralds fortune," commented the entrepreneur, a notable participant at the annual first sale.

Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is noted for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This most recent purchase tops his previous historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its eateries across Japan.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Swift Service

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one happy patron.
