Barry Manilow Scheduled for a Procedure for Lung Cancer.
The singer has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung and will be having surgery.
Spot Found in Initial Phase
The legendary 82-year-old artist, known for a string of beloved anthems from "Mandy" cemented his status as one of pop music’s enduringly popular performers, will have surgery to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is at an early phase.
“For those who have been following, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Even though I was over the bronchitis and performing again at the Westgate Las Vegas, my attentive medical team ordered an MRI just to ensure that everything was OK.
“The MRI identified a cancerous spot on my left side that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.”
Rescheduled Shows
He has postponed a series of planned shows, but indicated he would be on stage again by Valentine’s Day for his enduring concert series in Las Vegas.
He went on to say: “The medical team do not believe it has traveled and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. No radiation. Just home remedies and classic TV.
“I’m counting the days until I rejoin my home away from home for our Vegas run for our February love-themed shows.”
Professional and Personal Journey
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has been in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his manager and long-term partner in secret in 2014.
The duo were in a clandestine partnership for more than 35 years. Last year, Manilow discussed how crucial his partner had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.
“As my career exploded, it was just crazy. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re by yourself evening after evening,” he said.
“But I encountered my future husband right around when it was exploding. And I was spared from having to go back to those isolated suites. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you get yourself in trouble. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
